About the webinar
Ka Pomblang Nongkrem Dance popularly known as the Nonkrem Dance is a five-day Khasi religious celebration observed during autumn in Smit Village. It is celebrated in honour of the Goddess ‘Ka Blei Synshar’ for a good harvest and prosperity of the people. The festival is guided by the Traditional Chief, the ‘Syiem of Khyrim’ and the venerable high priest.
The ceremony unfolds gracefully and starts with a spectacle of dances, where maidens in traditional attire dance in the centre with grace while the men with an energetic fervour dance around the maidens. With a sword clasped in their right hand and a white Yak hair in their left, they synchronize their movements to the captivating beats of drums and the melody of pipes. The rituals culminate in an offering to the local deity ‘Lei Shyllong’ by a symbolic sacrifice of a rooster.
The essence of the Dance has been explored in depth by distinguished experts in the field which includes Dr. Madeline Yvonne Tham, Ar. Aiban S Mawkhroh, and Professor Emeritus Dennis Royse. Through their insightful perspectives, they unravel the cultural heritage, sacred spaces, and the melodic articulation of meaning within the Nongkrem Dance Festival, contributing to a deeper appreciation of this cherished Khasi tradition.
