Museums for Education and Research Symposium At Town Hall

Date: 19 May 2024 | Hybrid - Town Hall, Chandni Chowk
To mark International Museum Day, ICOMOS India North and Central Zone, in collaboration with IGNCA and MCD is organising a Symposium around the theme for IMD 2024 "Museums for Education and Research" on 19th May 2024 at Town Hall, Chandni Chowk from 3:00 - 7:00 PM.

About the Programme:

18th May has been celebrated as International Museum Day each year since 1977 with the objective of raising awareness about the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace among peoples.”

This year’s theme, “Museums for Education and Research,” underscores the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience. The International Museum Day supports a set of Goals from the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This year the focus is on:

  • Goal 4: Quality Education – Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

In Aug 2022 ICOM gave a new definition for a museum. “A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.”

This year, on the occasion of IMD 2024 a Symposium is being organized at the Town Hall, Shahjahanabad, Delhi with Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) as the host, and with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) collaborating with North Zone and Central Zone ICOMOS India.

In light of the above definition and the theme for this year's International Museum Day the symposium is being held in two sessions, the details of which are as follows:
  • Session One will deliberate on Education for museum conservators and managers, based on the expanded definition of Museums.
  • Session Two will deal with Living Heritage as a museum and various approaches to heritage resource adaptive reuse for shaping environments to serve as museums.
We invite museum specialists, professionals, communities, heritage students, professionals and stakeholders for creating synergies for promoting new discourses and interdisciplinary dialogues on this theme.
