ICOMOS India North-East Zone cordially extended an invitation to attend the webinar on 'Jingkieng Jri, Living Root Bridge of Meghalaya', as part of the UNFOLD NORTH EAST INDIA series scheduled for Saturday 9th December 2023 at 3:00 PM (New Delhi Time)
JINGKIENG JRI (LYU CHRAI), LIVING ROOT BRIDGE OF MEGHALAYA
Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape constitutes a living heritage of inseparable culture-nature relationships within Meghalaya, India. Nurtured by Indigenous Khasi-Jaintia communities who view themselves as caretakers of Ka Mei Ramew (Mother Earth), the landscape reveals profound links between community's respect and love for Mei Mariang (Mother Nature) and diverse markers shaping the landscape. Jingkieng Jri or Living Root Bridge constitutes one such exemplary marker embodying a profound culture-nature relationship. As Ficus-based solutions nurtured through an inter-generational process, their evolution reveals a vast array of interconnected factors, which contribute towards the emergence of a highly adaptable and resilient landscape. Significant factors contributing to the landscape include ki khlaw (forests), ki maw (stone signifiers), and ki lynti iaid kjat (paths) along with other tangible - intangible markers. Cultural traditions, food, music, dance, stories, jewellery, objects, arts-crafts, architecture and overall lifestyle show deep connections of people with the landscape with oral tradition. Primary research with communities has confirmed deep intelligence in Indigenous protection, management and conservation of nature, linking traditional belief and knowledge. Khasi-Jaintia people continue to nurture their landscape through a profound amalgamation of old and new, evolving and adapting.
