India is a country with a vast treasure of built heritage. Today there are 3676 Centrally Protected Monuments declared as National Monuments under the relevant clauses of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. There are around 5000 State Protected Monuments declared as State Monuments under the relevant clauses of their respective State acts.
The definition of Heritage and tools for protection of heritage on an international arena are best understood through the legal instruments towards protection formulated/propagated by the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO. The relationship of various charters and how they are adapted/ translated into our legal instruments needs to be explored.
Towards this need the National Scientific Committees on Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration (NSC-THEOPHIL), Training & Education (NSC-TR), Legal Administrative and Financials Issues (NSC-LAFI) and Emerging Professionals Working Group (EPWG) are coming together to organise a workshop on the topic:
'Discourse towards Adequate Legal Framework for India’s Heritage Protection' (Please find attached the detailed Program)
