The inheritance of 20th century architecture is rich and diverse, reflecting the prevalent socio-cultural philosophies and technological advancements of that time. The architecture thus born initiated a break from traditional architectural forms, design and use of materials encouraging a new form of artistic expression through innovative vision for spatial arrangement, structural innovations and new materials. The time between a building’s creation and its call for protection has never been as short as it is for the 20th century heritage and it’s crucial that comprehensive research frameworks for identification of 20th-century heritage are formed, encouraging conservation and protection before it’s too late.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this workshop, the participants should –
- Gain introduction to the concept of ‘20th century heritage’ and its identity and place in relation to various types of heritages.
- Develop an understanding to the ideas and philosophies of value and significance associated with 20th century heritage.
- Gain basic knowledge of the approaches to identification and listing process of 20th century heritage.
- Become aware and develop critical thinking about the recent past of historic heritages.
